I grew up fishing in Wellington chasing anything with fins. In the past I have run charters in the Bay of Islands NZ, catching everything from Snapper to Marlin and I have been a top Trout guide in Queenstown. After fishing the Wellington area for over 20 years I established Black Pearl Charters in 2013 and I am enjoying every minute of it.
My philosophy on guiding is to get you guys out there fishing and having fun. So I have built up a fishing charter that I would want to fish with if i was going on a charter – fast, clean, safe but most all fun.
Whether this is your first time or you have fished the world, you won’t be disappointed by my knowledge of the area and the fishing we have on offer. My friendly relaxed attitude will be sure to make for an enjoyable day on the water.
Boat: The Black Pearl
The BRAND NEW Black Pearl is a custom built 10m Osprey powered by twin 225 Yamaha outboards supporting the latest release in outboard technology, Yamahas “HELM MASTER” system.
Fully kitted out with the latest Raymarine electronics, with Matts 25 years of fishing in the Wellington area and ongoing experience in the charter industry no detail has been overlooked.
In full restricted coastal Maritime survey she truly is a go anywhere boat and the newest most modern charter boat in the Wellington area.
Reliable & fast, cruising at 30 knots she gets you to the fishing spots quickly and safely, meaning more time for fishing and less time traveling!
Directions: Launching Locations
On the majority of trips we leave from Mana Cruising Club or occasionally Seaview Marina depending on the weather and fishing expectations, I will confirm this with you the night before.
Mana Cruising Club 5 Pascoe Avenue, Mana, Porirua 5026, New Zealand.
When heading north on SH1 after going over the inlet bridge take a left at the second set of traffic lights at the marina motel. Head over the train tracks and take a left between the rugby fields. I will be to the right by the launching ramp.
Seaview Marina 100 Port Road, Seaview, Lower Hutt 5010, New Zealand.
Park on Port Road closest to the corner of Marine Drive (Eastbourne end) Walk through the track by the toilets and across the car park. I will be in front of you at the launching ramp.

We had another awesome trip with Matt Dobson, he is friendly and has a very clean and tidy vessel, its a beast of a boat really.
The fishing was a day of surprises starting with the weather followed by a mixed bag with Snapper, Gurnard, Trevally, Tarakihi, Kahawai all coming aboard...

January 7, 2021Did an awesome evening run with the boys last night and it was absolutely amazing and beautiful. Best charter any of us had been to in Wellington hands down! No over crowding, perfect size and space for 5 to comfortably fish and not just fishing in one single spot! We all went home with a decent amount of fish, was a good selection of Kahawai, Terakihi, Gurnard and Snapper. (There were a few sharks we had to get off the lines but it was great entertainment!) Matt is awesome and friendly, offered us a cuppa / drinks & snacks which we definitely weren't used to on other charters. We are all still buzzing from the trip and planning more to come. Definitely give Matt a call and plan your next charter with him, great value for money and a bloody good bloke!
